NST: Stadium Merdeka - PNB to Announce Plan
By MSuri

PNB to announce plan for 13ha prime property soon

18 January 2001

PERMODALAN Nasional Bhd (PNB) is expected to announce soon its detailed plan for the prime 13.08ha property occupied by Stadium Merdeka, Stadium Negara and Changkat Pavilion.

The company took over ownership of the property from United Engineers (M) Bhd (UEM) after it purchased the land from Pengurusan Danaharta Nasional Bhd late last year.

PNB chief executive Datuk Hamad Kama Piah Che Othman said at present, PNB is working out the "relevant matters" of the land.

He said this is because Danaharta still holds a portion of ownership of the property while PNB is having the majority stake.

He did not disclose the percentage share that Danaharta has on the project.

"Danaharta's task is to take over projects which have not been progressed.

The body (Danaharta) is free to sell the projects acquired (including the Stadium Merdeka land) to any company," he told Business Times at the Golden Hope Plantation Hari Raya gathering in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

PNB took over the plot of land which is currently occupied by the three national landmarks from UEM.

The land was reported to be owned by PNB subsidiary, PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Bhd.

The Government had in a 1994 agreement granted UEM the right to develop the site in exchange for building the RM800 million National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil.

The complex was completed on schedule for the 16th Commonwealth Games in 1998.

Stadium Merdeka Corp was formed in 1957 to manage Merdeka Stadium and Stadium Negara and is now running the Bukit Jalil sports complex.

UEM had in 1998 said it was deferring plans to build four office tower blocks and a retail complex on the site, given the economic downturn then.

In September, Business Times reported that it was still not clear whether UEM had obtained all the necessary approvals to proceed with the proposed project.

UEM has said that the site, valued at RM368 million in 1994, would be developed by Puncak Vista Sdn Bhd, a former wholly-owned subsidiary.

Since then, UEM has divested 70 per cent of Puncak Vista to Merdeka Park Holdings Sdn Bhd.

Stadium Merdeka, Stadium Negara and Changkat Pavilion were supposed to be demolished to build a five-star convention centre, a hotel, and residential and commercial properties.
