Star: 68 Kaunter Dibawah Paras 1998 Yang Kronik
By Kapal Berita

68 counters trading below
1998 crash level

SIXTY-EIGHT companies listed on the KLSE--39 on the main board and 29 on the second board--have really been sharply clawed in the current bear market.

Although the KLSE Composite Index (CI) closed at 657 points yesterday, 394 points higher than the 263 level it sank to on Sept 1, 1998, when the government imposed foreign exchange controls, the 68 counters are trading below their closing prices on that momentous day.

And 5 others are at risk of joining them.

Among the most badly wounded are CCM Bhd, Leisure Management Bhd, Avangarde Bhd, Lankhorst Bhd and Pencorp Bhd, whose share prices are now at least 35% lower than their Sept 1, 1998, closing level.

Some of these companies have suffered from financial stress and have had to undertake major restructuring exercises.

Looking at the big picture, however, the 68 make up less than 10% of the 799 counters trading on the KLSE.

A quick check of the figures indicate that a majority of the counters are still enjoying substantial gains compared with their price levels on Sept 1, 1998.

On that day, the top three heavyweights--Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Telekom Malaysia Bhd and Malayan Banking Bhd--were traded at lows of RM2.08, RM4.34 and RM2.84 respectively.

In comparison, Tenaga finished at RM11 yesterday, Telekom at RM11.20 and Maybank at RM13.60.

Among other blue chips, Sept 1, 1998 saw Genting Bhd shares falling to RM6.40, British American Tobacco Bhd (BAT) to RM13.50, MPI Bhd to RM2.66, Malakoff Bhd to RM3.14 and Tanjong Plc to RM2.73.

Yesterday, Genting closed at RM9.30, BAT at RM35, MPI at RM14.80, Malakoff at RM8.95 and Tanjong at RM6.80.
